Andean Cock-of-the-Rock - Rupicola peruvianus

One of the most sought after birds in South America is the Andean Cock-of-the-Rock. Not only because of its flaming red color and unique crest, but because of its behavior. The brightly colored males would gather together in a lek and proceed with their quaint displays to attract the females.

We were lucky to have witnessed such behavior at the Refugio Paz de las Aves in Ecuador. The gloomy weather was discouraging as we approached the area near the lek. Then came the group at quite a distance at first. Then slowly the males moved closer to where a bunch awe-struck birders were watching them.

After we photographers had our fill, so to speak, it drizzled. We were glad to have had this rare opportunity of witnessing the star bird of Ecuador.
